Houston Astrodome

The Astrodome opened in 1965 as the world's first multi-purpose, domed sports stadium and was promoted at the time as the "Eighth Wonder of the World." It served as the home of the Houston Astros baseball team from 1965 through 1999 and hosted many major sporting events and concerts. The Astrodome was an early site for the development of synthetic playing surfaces commercially known as AstroTurf. The structure remains a prominent historic landmark in Houston despite long-term disuse and preservation debates.
