The Cloisters (Metropolitan Museum of Art)

The Cloisters opened to the public in 1938 as a branch of the Metropolitan Museum of Art dedicated to European medieval art and architecture. The building incorporates reconstructed medieval cloister elements imported from Europe and sited in Fort Tryon Park overlooking the Hudson River. Its collection includes important liturgical objects, sculpture, and the famed late-medieval 'Hunt of the Unicorn' tapestry series. The museum is both an architectural assemblage and a specialized art collection focused on the Middle Ages.
