San Juan del Puerto (Spanish mission site, Fort George Island)

San Juan del Puerto was a Spanish Franciscan mission established to minister to the Timucua people in northeastern Florida and was active from the late 16th into the 17th century. Documentary records and archaeological investigations place the mission on or near present-day Fort George Island, within what is now the Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve. The site is cited in studies of Spain's colonial mission system and indigenous-Spanish interactions in the St. Johns River region.
