Bessastaðir

Bessastaðir, located in Álftanes, Iceland, is the official residence of the president and has a rich history dating back to its settlement in 1000 AD. Originally a farm owned by the notable figure Snorri Sturluson in the 13th century, it has served various roles including a royal stronghold and a school. The site is notable for withstanding an attack by Turkish slave raiders in 1627. In the 20th century, it was donated to the state by Sigurður Jónasson to serve as the presidential residence. Visitors can appreciate its historical significance and scenic location just 15 kilometers from Reykjavík.
