Old Point Loma Lighthouse (decommissioned 1891)

The original Point Loma Lighthouse was completed in 1855 and was the first lighthouse on the West Coast of the United States. It was decommissioned in 1891 because fog and low visibility at the mountaintop site made it ineffective for navigation, and a new lighthouse at a lower elevation replaced its navigational function. The decommissioned lighthouse building remains preserved as a historic structure within Cabrillo National Monument.
