Palace of Fine Arts is largely a mid-20th-century reconstruction

The Palace of Fine Arts was built for the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition as a temporary structure and by mid-century had deteriorated; the monumental features seen today are largely the result of a major reconstruction and restoration carried out in the 1960s–1970s. Although often assumed to be the original 1915 fabric, much of the visible rotunda and colonnades were rebuilt in permanent materials during that restoration. The site at 3301 Lyon Street is maintained as a landmark and public park.
