San Juan del Puerto Spanish Mission site

San Juan del Puerto was a Spanish Franciscan mission that served the Mocama-speaking Timucua people on Fort George Island during the late 16th and 17th centuries. Archaeological investigations at the Kingsley Plantation area have uncovered features interpreted as remains of the mission complex, including structural and artifact evidence. The National Park Service interprets the mission's role in colonial-era contact between Spanish missionaries and local indigenous communities as part of the Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve.
