State Bank of North Carolina

The State Bank of North Carolina, located in Raleigh, is the oldest surviving commercial building in the city and the first state-sponsored banking institution in the state. Established in 1810, it played a crucial role during the War of 1812 by relocating cash inland for safety. The building, designed in Federal and Greek Revival styles, features impressive two-story porticos and has served various purposes over the years, including a rectory and a bank branch. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970 and remains a significant historic landmark in the Capitol Area Historic District, currently operated by the State Employees Credit Union.
