Fort Negley National Historic Site

Fort Negley was built by Union forces in 1862–1863 during the Civil War; construction relied heavily on African American laborers, including formerly enslaved people and U.S. Colored Troops. At the time it was one of the largest inland stone forts constructed in the region. The site later fell into disrepair and is now preserved as Fort Negley Park with archaeological study and interpretive exhibits that document its Civil War-era history and the role of Black labor.
