Cliveden (Benjamin Chew House) - Battle of Germantown strongpoint

Cliveden, the Benjamin Chew House, was the focal point of intense fighting on October 4, 1777 during the Battle of Germantown. British troops fortified the stone mansion and used it as a defensive strongpoint that repelled repeated American assaults. American forces briefly entered the grounds but were ultimately driven back, and the house’s role in the battle is well documented. Cliveden is now a National Historic Landmark preserving that Revolutionary War action.
