Shambles, Shepton Mallet

The Shambles in Shepton Mallet, Somerset, is a Grade II listed monument and a rare surviving example of medieval butcher's market stalls, reconstructed in the early 20th century. Originally established around 1450, these stalls, known as 'shambles', were used for selling meat and derived their name from the Middle English term for 'flesh shelves'. The structure reflects the town's rich market history, dating back to a charter granted in 1219. Although the original stalls were removed in the 19th century due to hygiene concerns, the reconstructed Shambles remains a significant historical attraction, showcasing the architectural style of its time and the evolution of market practices in England.
