Michigan Central Station hidden platforms and service rooms

Michigan Central Station, built in 1913 and closed to passenger service in 1988, contains former lower-level platforms, baggage rooms, mail and express facilities, and service tunnels that were sealed and inaccessible for decades during the building's vacancy. Many of these spaces remained behind boarded doors and tarps and were documented by photographers and preservationists while the station sat abandoned. Ford Motor Company bought the building in 2018 and restoration and stabilization work has since exposed and conserved several previously sealed interior rooms and infrastructure. Guided preservation tours and documentation projects have recorded these formerly hidden areas.
