Alte Waage (Leipzig)

The Alte Waage, or Old Weigh House, is a historic building located in the heart of Leipzig, Germany, originally constructed in 1555. This striking example of Saxon Renaissance architecture served as the center for the Leipzig Trade Fair, where goods were weighed and tariffs collected, contributing significantly to the city's revenue. Over the centuries, it housed various important functions, including a post office and the Leipzig Fair office, before being destroyed in an air raid in 1943. A modern building was erected in its place in the 1960s, retaining some elements of the original design. Today, it serves as the regional headquarters for an insurance company, with a fast food restaurant on the ground floor, making it a blend of historical significance and contemporary utility, appealing to both tourists and researchers interested in Leipzig's rich history.
