National Christmas Tree on the Ellipse

The tradition of the National Christmas Tree began in 1923 when President Calvin Coolidge lit the first tree on the Ellipse in President's Park south of the White House. Each year a tree (and surrounding lighting display) is sited on the Ellipse for the official national lighting ceremony and public viewing during the holiday season. The annual installation and lighting ceremony are organized by the National Park Service and the White House.
