New York Marble Cemetery

Founded in 1830–1831, the New York Marble Cemetery on MacDougal Street contains a series of underground family vaults lined with marble, built as a response to public health concerns about burials in wooden coffins. It is one of two distinct 'marble' cemeteries in lower Manhattan and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The site is privately owned but opens occasionally to the public for tours and commemorative events, and it is frequently cited in local histories of early 19th‑century New York burial practices.
