Mission Nuestra Señora del Espíritu Santo de Zúñiga

Mission Nuestra Señora del Espíritu Santo de Zúñiga, established in 1722, is a historic Roman Catholic mission located in Goliad, Texas. Originally founded to convert native Karankawa Indians, the mission played a crucial role in Spanish territorial claims against French encroachment. It was relocated multiple times, ultimately thriving as a cattle ranch and agricultural hub. The mission's impressive stone structures and surrounding Presidio La Bahía were completed in the 1750s, serving various tribes and becoming a center of trade. After secularization in the early 19th century, the mission fell into disrepair but was restored in the 20th century and is now part of Goliad State Park, attracting visitors interested in Texas history and heritage.
