S. H. Kress and Co. Building (Fort Worth, Texas)

The S.H. Kress and Co. Building, a striking example of Classical Moderne Art Deco architecture, is located in downtown Fort Worth, Texas. Designed by architect Edward F. Sibbert and completed in 1936, it served as a five-and-dime store until 1960 and was notable for being one of the few major constructions funded privately during the Great Depression. The building features unique Meso-American design elements, an Italian marble floor, and was one of the first in the area to have central air conditioning. After a series of transitions, including housing a comedy club and a museum, it underwent renovations in the mid-2000s to become loft housing. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007 and remains a significant landmark in Fort Worth's architectural history.
