Washington Monument - once the world's tallest structure

When completed in 1884, the Washington Monument became the world's tallest structure and remained the tallest man-made structure until the completion of the Eiffel Tower in 1889. It is the tallest stone structure and obelisk in the world and a prominent feature of the National Mall. The monument commemorates George Washington and continues to be a major national landmark.
