Alcatraz Island / 1969–1971 Native American Occupation

Alcatraz Island operated as a federal penitentiary from 1934 to 1963 and later became the site of a landmark Native American occupation beginning November 20, 1969, led by a group calling themselves Indians of All Tribes. The occupation, which lasted intermittently until June 1971, drew national attention to Indigenous rights and influenced federal policy discussions. Alcatraz is now managed as part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, with visitor boat departures from Pier 33.
