National Capitol Columns - original U.S. Capitol East Portico columns

The National Capitol Columns are twenty-two original Corinthian marble columns that once supported the East Portico of the U.S. Capitol and were relocated to the U.S. National Arboretum, where they stand as a freestanding architectural installation. These columns are original architectural elements removed from the Capitol and reassembled on a landscaped hill at the Arboretum as a distinctive historic display. The installation is interpreted as a rare survival of early 19th-century Capitol fabric outside its original setting. The columns remain a unique tangible link to the Capitol’s 19th-century architecture.
