General Staff Building (Ankara)

The General Staff Building, located in Çankaya, Ankara, is a significant architectural landmark that serves as the administrative headquarters of the Turkish Armed Forces. Opened in 1929 and designed by Clemens Holzmeister, the building features a distinctive 'H' shape with a massive and plain appearance, characterized by evenly spaced square windows. Its design includes a striking half-cylinder entrance that softens the overall sharp angles of the structure. The building's history is rooted in a donation from a Turkish farmer's field, which was purchased to establish this important military facility. Over the years, it has undergone expansions, including a connection to the National Defense Headquarters in 1959 and an additional building in 1970 to accommodate growing needs. This site not only represents military significance but also showcases early 20th-century Turkish architecture.
