Monte Cristo Cottage, also known as the Eugene O'Neill Summer House, is a historic landmark located in New London, Connecticut. This charming two-story house was the summer residence of actor James O'Neill and his son, the renowned playwright Eugene O'Neill. Built in the 1840s and expanded by James O'Neill, the cottage served as a retreat for the family during Eugene's childhood, where he likely penned his early works. The cottage is notable for its connection to O'Neill's plays, including 'Ah, Wilderness!' and 'Long Day's Journey into Night,' the latter earning him a Pulitzer Prize. Declared a National Historic Landmark in 1971, it is now operated as a museum by the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center, showcasing exhibits on O'Neill's life and works, along with original artifacts like his writing desk.
