Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture (named for Charlotte's first Black mayor)

The Harvey B. Gantt Center is named for Harvey Gantt, Charlotte's first African-American mayor who served from 1983 to 1987 and was an architect by training. The center presents rotating exhibitions, educational programs, and public events focused on African-American art and history. Its current Uptown building opened in 2009 and serves as the city's primary cultural institution dedicated to African-American contributions.
