Essex Company Machine Shop

The Essex Company Machine Shop, also known as Stone Mill, is a historic site located in Lawrence, Massachusetts, built in 1846. It played a crucial role in the establishment of Lawrence as a manufacturing hub along the Merrimack River. The shop was part of a larger complex that included a foundry and forge, powered by innovative water turbines. With a capacity to employ up to 1,000 workers, it was a significant contributor to the local economy in the 19th century. The building, notable for its size and design accommodating steam locomotives, is one of the few remaining structures from the original Essex Company site and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972, making it a point of interest for both tourists and researchers.
