Archaeological investigations at the Washington Monument grounds

Archaeologists have conducted monitoring and targeted excavations around the Washington Monument during repair and landscaping projects, documenting 19th- and early-20th-century foundations, pathways, and landscape features. Artifact assemblages recovered include domestic ceramics, glass, and metal objects related to National Mall use and maintenance. The findings have been used to inform restoration approaches and historical interpretation of the Monument’s immediate landscape.
