Congress Avenue Bridge bat colony

The Ann W. Richards Congress Avenue Bridge hosts an estimated 750,000–1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats each summer. The nightly emergence at dusk is widely described in scientific and tourism sources as the largest urban bat colony in North America. Biologists have documented the colony since the 1980s and the bats are credited with significant local insect control during the summer months.
