Scotch Hall

Scotch Hall is a historic plantation house located near Merry Hill in Bertie County, North Carolina, built around 1838. This impressive 2+1⁄2-story dwelling showcases a blend of Federal and Greek Revival architectural styles. Recognized for its historical significance, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. Notably, George H. Throop, who lived there in 1849, served as a tutor for the family’s children and later drew inspiration from his experiences to write two novels, featuring Scotch Hall as the fictional 'Cypress Shore'.
