Main building of Tartu University

The Main building of Tartu University, an iconic example of classical architecture in Estonia, was constructed between 1804 and 1809 for the Imperial University of Dorpat, designed by architect Johann Wilhelm Krause. It has undergone several restorations, notably after a fire in 1965 and most recently in 2007. Visitors can explore its impressive large auditorium and learn about its unique history, including the attic rooms that were once used to detain students as punishment in the 19th century.
