Royal Sea Bathing Hospital

The Royal Sea Bathing Hospital, established in 1791 in Margate, Kent, is one of the UK's earliest specialist orthopaedic hospitals, originally founded by Dr. John Coakley Lettsom for treating scrofula. Known for its innovative open-air treatment methods, the hospital emphasized the healing properties of sunshine, fresh air, and sea bathing. Over the years, it expanded to include an indoor pool and additional wards, particularly after significant donations in the late 19th century. The hospital ceased treating tuberculosis patients in the 1950s and has since been converted into apartments. The site features notable architecture, including a grade II listed chapel with exquisite stained glass and a statue of Erasmus Wilson, a key benefactor.
