Presidio of San Francisco - Spanish fort and U.S. Army post

The Presidio of San Francisco was established as a Spanish military post in 1776 and later served as a Mexican presidio before becoming a U.S. Army post after 1846. It functioned as a major coastal defense and troop garrison through the Civil War, the Spanish–American War, World War I, and World War II. The U.S. Army maintained an active presence there until the base's transfer to the National Park Service and Presidio Trust in 1994.
