Lincoln Memorial (West Potomac Park)

Construction of the Lincoln Memorial began in 1914 and the monument was dedicated on May 30, 1922; it honors President Abraham Lincoln. The memorial's 36 Doric columns represent the states in the Union at Lincoln's death and the structure is a focal point on the western end of the National Mall. The site was the location of Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech during the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.
