Washington Monument cornerstone

The Washington Monument's cornerstone was laid on July 4, 1848, in a public ceremony that included Masonic elements. Construction halted in the 1850s for more than two decades; work resumed in 1879, the capstone was set in 1884, and the monument was dedicated in 1885. The original cornerstone marks the formal beginning of the obelisk now standing on the National Mall.
