Oakland (Parkersburg, West Virginia)

Oakland, also known as the James M. Stephenson House, is a historic home located in Parkersburg, West Virginia. Built in 1840, this two-story, L-shaped red brick house showcases Greek Revival architecture, featuring a low hipped roof with a cupola and a charming portico supported by fluted Doric columns. The house has a complex history, having been occupied by Union cavalry during the Civil War, which resulted in damage to its furnishings and gardens. Despite its ties to a Confederate sympathizer, the owner allowed Union forces to use his property. Oakland was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979 and was donated to the WVU Parkersburg Foundation in 2015, making it a notable site for both tourists and researchers interested in Civil War history and architectural heritage.
