The Heidelberg Project (painted houses and outdoor murals)

The Heidelberg Project is an outdoor art environment begun by Tyree Guyton in 1986 on Heidelberg Street that includes painted house exteriors, found-object installations, and mural-like imagery covering buildings and objects. The project transformed multiple addresses on the 3600 block of Heidelberg Street into large-scale public artworks and has been the focus of ongoing community, artistic, and municipal discussions. Portions of the project have been removed or altered by the city at various times, a fact documented in news reports and municipal records.
