16th Avenue Tiled Steps community mosaic

The 16th Avenue Tiled Steps (Mosaic Staircase) on the Inner Sunset were completed in 2005 as a community-led public art project; the staircase features a large, intricate mosaic depicting a flowing sea-to-sky design across its risers. The project was designed and installed by neighborhood volunteers under the direction of artists Aileen Barr and Colette Crutcher and has become a locally celebrated example of grassroots public art and community beautification. The steps are a frequent subject of photography and neighborhood lore and are documented in city arts and tourism materials.
