Houghton House (St. Albans, Vermont)

The Houghton House, located at 86 South Main Street in St. Albans, Vermont, is a historic building dating back to around 1800, showcasing a blend of Georgian and Federal architectural styles. This well-preserved structure features a symmetrical five-bay facade with a central entrance and a distinctive Palladian window above it. Inside, visitors can admire high-quality woodwork from the late 1820s, including elaborately designed parlors and a Georgian central hall plan. Originally built by John Curtis and later modified by Abel Houghton, the house has been in the Houghton family for generations and is now a funeral home. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972, making it one of the oldest surviving buildings in the city and a notable site for both tourists and researchers interested in early American architecture.
