Sinking of the steamship City of Rio de Janeiro at the Golden Gate

On February 22, 1901, the steamship City of Rio de Janeiro struck rocks near the entrance to San Francisco Bay and sank off the Golden Gate, with the loss of approximately 128 passengers and crew. The wreck and the deaths were a major maritime disaster for the city at the time, and survivors were brought to shore near Fort Point. The sinking occurred in the waters immediately seaward of Fort Point, complicating rescue and recovery efforts in heavy seas.
