Wave Organ - Tidal Acoustic Sculpture

The Wave Organ, created in 1986 by artist Peter Richards, is an acoustic sculpture built of stone and concrete with a series of pipes and chambers that interact with the tides to produce varying sounds. Located on a jetty off the Marina shoreline, the installation's audible effects change with tide and wave action, making the experience site- and time-specific. The Wave Organ is a notable example of environmental public art that directly uses San Francisco Bay's tidal dynamics.
