Tremont Temple - early racially integrated church

Tremont Temple, founded in the early 19th century and located on Tremont Street, has long been identified in local histories as one of the first churches in the United States to welcome racially integrated congregations and to host abolitionist meetings. The congregation historically operated the building as a public, nonsectarian meeting space as well as a place of worship. The claim of being the 'first' integrated church is part of the institution's historical narrative and has been noted in scholarly and popular accounts of Boston's religious and abolitionist history.
