The Old Manor House, Clifton

The Old Manor House, also known as Nell Gwynne's House, is a historic Grade II* listed building located in the Clifton area of York, England. Originally built between the 14th and 16th centuries, it underwent significant rebuilding in the late 17th century, possibly due to damage from the Siege of York. The house is steeped in local legend, claiming that Nell Gwynne, a famous mistress of Charles II, once stayed here. Over the centuries, it has served various purposes, including housing working-class families and operating as a tobacconist and barbers shop. The building features two storeys with an attic, distinctive gables, and retains many original 16th and 17th-century architectural elements, such as ceiling beams, fireplaces, and a historic entrance door. The house was restored in the 1960s and is currently a private residence, having been placed on the market in 2020 for £1.29 million.
