Casa de Ferro

The Casa de Ferro, or Iron House, is a historic prefabricated iron building in Maputo, Mozambique, originally constructed in Belgium and reassembled in 1892. Intended as the residence for the Governor of Lourenço Marques, it was never inhabited due to the Governor's preference for traditional architecture. Over the years, it has served various educational and governmental purposes, including housing a missionary institute and colonial offices. The building showcases the innovative Danly construction system, designed for hot climates, featuring a wrought iron structure and decorative embossed panels. Open to the public, the Casa de Ferro is a remarkable example of colonial architecture and a testament to the use of iron in the late 19th century.
