Victory House

Victory House, originally known as Permanent Buildings, is a historically significant office building located in Marshalltown, Johannesburg. Completed in 1897, it was the first building in the city to feature a lift, which was a technological marvel of its time. Designed in the Creative Eclectic Style by architect Stucke, the building showcases a blend of Victorian architectural elements, including decorative wrought iron and red brickwork. It served as a prestigious commercial structure just before the South African War and is notable for its association with historical figures, including Mahatma Gandhi, who famously refused to use the lift due to a discriminatory incident. Today, Victory House stands as a testament to Johannesburg's architectural heritage and its evolution during the late Victorian era.
