Regent Theatre, Christchurch

The Regent Theatre, originally opened in 1905 as the Royal Exchange Building, was a prominent Edwardian Baroque structure located at the corner of Worcester Street and Cathedral Square in Christchurch, New Zealand. Renowned for its luxurious interior redesign in 1930, it became a popular cinema featuring the largest screen in Australasia at the time. The theatre faced significant challenges, including a devastating fire in 1979 and severe damage from the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes, ultimately leading to its demolition in 2011. Recognized as a Category I historic place, the Regent Theatre's legacy continues to be felt in the area, with its iconic dome now residing in a residential property in Linwood.
