University of Baeza

The University of Baeza, established in 1538 in the historic city of Baeza, Spain, was a significant educational institution until its closure in 1824. Known for its liberal arts, medicine, and theology curriculum, it was granted pontifical status in 1630. The university played a crucial role in the intellectual life of the region, attracting notable figures like Saint John of Avila and facing challenges from the Spanish Inquisition due to its progressive ideas. Although it fell into decline, the legacy of the university continues today with the Antonio Machado Summer University, which revives higher education in the area. The original university building, constructed in 1595, now houses the Instituto 'Stma. Trinidad', preserving its cultural heritage while integrating modern facilities.
