Laurel Hill Cemetery - early rural cemetery and National Historic Landmark

Laurel Hill Cemetery, established in 1836 and designed in part by architect John Notman, is one of the earliest rural cemeteries in the United States and was designated a National Historic Landmark for its landscape and architecture. The cemetery overlooks the Schuylkill River and contains the graves of notable Philadelphians, Victorian funerary monuments, and works by prominent sculptors. It remains an active cemetery and a documented example of 19th‑century cemetery design and commemoration.
