Telesterion

The Telesterion, an ancient sanctuary in Eleusis, Greece, served as the central hall for the Eleusinian Mysteries, one of the most sacred religious rites in ancient Greece. Built in the 7th century BCE, it could accommodate up to 3,000 people and was dedicated to the goddesses Demeter and Persephone. The ceremonies held here were shrouded in secrecy, with initiates forbidden to disclose their experiences. The hall underwent multiple reconstructions after being destroyed by invaders, including the Persians and later the Costoboci. The Telesterion's architectural design resembled a performance hall rather than a traditional temple, reflecting its unique role in ancient rituals.
