Adams-Nervine Asylum

The Adams-Nervine Asylum, established in 1880 in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, was a pioneering institution focused on the moral treatment of patients with nervous disorders, particularly women affected by the stresses of domestic life. Founded by Seth Adams with a significant endowment, the asylum emphasized patient dignity and individuality, influenced by the theories of psychiatrist Thomas Kirkbride. The complex features notable architectural styles, including French Mansard and Colonial Revival, and has been recognized as a Boston Landmark. After closing in 1976, the historic buildings have been repurposed into condominiums and apartments, making it a unique site for both historical interest and modern living.
