Gay Liberation Monument (George Segal) - Christopher Park

The Gay Liberation Monument, a life-size painted-bronze sculpture group by George Segal, was installed in Christopher Park near the Stonewall Inn and dedicated in 1992. The work depicts two same-sex couples and was one of the first public monuments in the United States to commemorate LGBTQ people and activism. Its placement adjacent to the Stonewall site links the monument to the neighborhood’s role in the modern LGBTQ rights movement and to ongoing commemorations there.
