Crane and Company Old Stone Mill Rag Room

The Crane and Company Old Stone Mill Rag Room, built in 1844, is a historic building located in Dalton, Massachusetts, and is part of one of the oldest papermaking businesses in the region. Originally used for processing rags, it now serves as the Crane Museum of Papermaking, showcasing the history of the company since 1930. The building is a gray fieldstone structure with a slate roof and has been designated a National Historic Landmark. Visitors can explore exhibits featuring artifacts from the papermaking process, including tools used by founder Zenas Crane. The Rag Room is notable for its connection to Winthrop Murray Crane, who secured a government contract for producing U.S. currency paper.
