The Athenaeum (Das Deutsche Haus)

The Athenaeum, originally known as Das Deutsche Haus and completed in 1893, was built as a German-American social and cultural center and remains a surviving example of German-American Turner halls in the United States. The building contains historic assembly halls, ornate interior decoration, and a gymnasium associated with the Turner movement; portions of the interior are used for private events, cultural programming, and a restaurant. The Athenaeum is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is less frequently visited by casual tourists compared with larger downtown institutions, making its full interiors easy to miss without scheduled events or tours.
